Outdoor grilling is a popular hobby for many who tackle the art of barbecue. There is nothing quite like the draw of the grilling on a patio on a warm summer day. Or is there?
Depending on where you live, the climate or space in your yard can make grilling outside a challenge. Have you ever thought about bringing your grilling hobby inside? We have some ideas for you on how to mimic that outdoor grill flavor in the comfortable constant of the indoors.
Stock up on the Essentials
Start by purchasing a cast-iron grill pan. Famous grill master Bobby Flay says, “Cast iron holds heat extremely well, and the ridges give your food great-looking grill marks.” Second, get yourself all the tools and utensils you need to set yourself up for success. You will need tongs, a heavy-duty spatula, pastry brushes, and a heavy-duty grill brush.
Break out the Flavor
If your cast-iron grill pan is new, prepare yourself for new flavor delights. The concept is simple: the more you use it and cook things in it, the more flavor you get. To break your cast-iron grill pan in, preheat the oven to 375 degrees and saturate the pan in oil, using a paper towel. Then place the pan in the oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, turn off the heat and let the pan sit in the oven until completely cool.
Now that your pan is ready to go, you will not oil the grill pan again. You will, however, want to oil both sides of everything you grill. Otherwise, your food will burn, which will not turn you on to this grilling hobby. Heat the pan, and once it begins to smoke, you can grill your oiled meats, fish, or veggies according to the recipe.
Grill Like a Pro
Keep the smoke to a minimum by not over oiling your food. Do not press down on foods to squeeze juices out; not only will this cause more smoke, but it will also dry out your food. If you want that delicious smoky taste from your indoor grill, consider using a smoke-heavy barbeque sauce or marinade.
Grill like a boss by being patient about when you flip your food. Turning your burgers too soon can cause them to break apart and cook unevenly.
You can even wow your dinner guests by making those professional-looking grill marks. Simply press your meat to the grill pan at a 45-degree angle for a few minutes before rotating and repeating. Your food will look like you just took it off the outdoor barbecue!
Grill in the Oven
Not sold on the whole indoor grilling concept yet? That’s OK! Skip the stove altogether and grill in your oven! That’s right; your broiler can serve as a grill, too. All you have to do is preheat your pan and put your food as close to the top of the oven as possible to enjoy “grilled” indoor food.
